Since we weren’t that excited about what we found on the Mooreland House yesterday, we thought we would do a thorough inspection with the drone today. Instead of trying to answer a bunch of questions in messages, Frank figured he would share the unedited video and do a voice over. The tower is in pretty bad shape but it is fixable. We will have to take down a bunch of stone but we think it will make it through the winter as is. We hope…
Oh my gosh! The drone did amazing helping you see a closer look at all the stones on the tower. Very intriguing to see this.

So, a couple of questions…
1) what kind of mortar will you use to replace the cement and then the limestone mortar
2) how much of this tower are you going to have to take down?

1) We are going to use “lime mortar”. With a lot of historic homes being restored around the US there is a lot more availability to the products used in historic renovation. It is quite a bit more expensive but it will make sure the Mooreland House lasts another 130 years. We have watched hours of videos on the benefits of lime mortar vs. cement mortar.
2) We don’t know how much needs to come down. We want to only do one major stone project at a time. We just want to bandage the tower for now and focus on rebuilding the stone façade on the front dormer. We will be ole pros by time we complete that job and will be able to analyze the tower better.

I am always amazed at the quality of workmanship of yesteryear’s crafters. A time when quality was more important than the time it took to accomplish it. Such a beautiful home it was And will be again!

Absolutely! We are learning so much. Without the wealth of information available on YouTube these days, there is no way any of this would be possible. We are trying to replicate the quality workmanship they had. A lot of it is just caring about what you are doing and putting forth that little extra effort.

Yes, or that game where you pull sticks out and try not to be the last one that causes all the marbles to collapse. We are glad you have stuck with us through all the changes. Frank’s niece is the one that did the work on the website.
