Saving the Kitchen Porch

We are finally building what we hope is the last temporary wall. The covered porch outside the kitchen in the back of the Mooreland House was about to cave in. This is all part of the original house so we want to preserve it and make it like the original. If the roof were to fall in here, it would be difficult to get it all put back together. Supporting this area and stopping the water intrusion will go a long way to ensuring that it is still standing when we get back to fix it properly.

That stings when you know the money you’ve spent on materials will only provide a temporary fix. A familiar story, right? Down the long road, when the screened porch has been rebuilt….. what a peaceful place to spend time! That might become a favorite spot.

Yes, once we take down the glass, vinyl siding and reveal the original wooden floor this place will be great again. Silly Covids has sure made things interesting way back in 2020.

It will be nice when we are just repairing instead of rescuing. Sometimes rescuing doesn’t seem like we are moving in the right direction.

All the temporary lumber will be used in other areas at some point won’t it? Lumber can be so expensive I told my husband it’s like ‘gold’!

We always have projects going… we will be able to use everything again. Lumber prices went up by about 3 times this summer and fall. Many people put off building until the prices come back down. We didn’t have the option of waiting… we needed it now. =)

Yes, and the roof that covers this porch is also over the entire back part of the house that includes the kitchen. If this fell in, it would destroy the whole back part of the house.
