We had another beautiful day at the Mooreland House. It was windy but the sun was shining and it was 40 degrees. Kerry got tired of seeing the vines that covered the final Osage Orange tree at the front of the house. It was below freezing in the house so we decided to work outside. This is a transformation that is very visible.

Mooreland House 
I’ve never heard of an Osage Orange tree. I’ll have to research this. Maybe it’s a transplant from Osage County Oklahoma…huh Kerry? 😉

Not sure where they are from but we found out what they were when we asked about them on FaceBook. We think they are very ugly trees but people ooh and aah over them so… we are torn on what to do with them. They were planted by Col. Moore for his new wife Minnie Ball. They drop unusable fruit called “hedge apples” that are about the size of softballs.

Yes, after I googled it, it is a hedge apple tree. I’ve been told if you throw them in crawl spaces (under a home) they deter mice. I rarely see these trees in northeastern Oklahoma but we do pick some up in the southern part of the state.
It’s cool they were planted for Mini. I’d definitely keep them. 💚

They also have thorns on the new growth. They really hurt.

It looks great! We have those trees in East Texas. Horses love to eat the hedge apples. The only use I know of for them. I guess Minnie Ball loved them…glad to know someone did! 🙂

Luckily our trees are either mostly males (they don’t drop fruit) or they are not very healthy because we only had to pick up about 10 hedge apples for 4 large trees.

They look much nicer now that you can actually see all of them. A much cleaner sight for sure. Once we cleaned out our tree line (divides the property lines with the neighbors) I planted different kinds of pretty tall grasses (like Zebra grass).

If I’m not mistaken the huge tree that grows along the ground at Fort Harrod is an Osage Orange tree.

Yes, it does look better. You are correct the tree at Fort Harrod is an Osage Orange. We probably will do something with it if it gets to that shape.

I love that crazy looking old tree and all the kids love climbing on it when they hold events. It’s like a free baby sitter while they shop and socialize.
