We got busy yesterday and forgot to post. We had to prep the roof for the rain that was forecast. It shouldn’t leak. Even if it leaks a little it will still be an improvement. We hope to get the top flat roof done soon. That will be a big milestone.

Is there a reason that you’re not using an underlayment material under the slate shingles? I thought roofers use that to add another layer of protection from water leakage.

One of the reasons that the roof is in such bad shape is because of the tar paper that was under the slate. The tar infused paper only retains the tar for a certain amount of time. After the tar is leeched out of the paper it starts to hold moisture and deteriorated the slate from underneath. Without an underlayment any leaks will be easy to identify and fix before they cause more damage. There is not any other roofing material that is designed to last over 100 years.
