There are two types of brickwork in the Mooreland House. There is the brickwork that has been kept wet and brickwork that has been kept dry. The first picture is how it looked in 1891 and still looks today and the second picture is what happens when it stayed wet. Guess which stack of bricks we have to tear down…

Do you use the hot lime mortar for the walls also? Or will that be regular mortar?

We will be using hot lime mortar for all the limestone work. We will probably use a combination of concrete block and regular mortar to redo the freestanding pillars of brick. There is no way that what was there would pass any kind of building code today even though it didn’t technically fall down for 130 years.
