Stonework update

We are learning more and more every day about how the brick and stonework has to be restored at the Mooreland House. The modern mortars of today just do not work with this type of brick and stone construction. We have finally found the correct way to go forward with the repairs that have to be done. If you are curious, you can look at some videos about “hot lime mortar” to see what we are going to have to use. We have been able to source some quicklime and we will be able to begin once the temps get above freezing for a few days. As far as we know… there are no masons in this area that use this process. We are doing it this way because it is the only way it will last for another 130 years. This book has proved invaluable.

You would think with the amount of people that restore old homes, a masonry company that specializes in old homes, would have a SME to repair it or give tips on repairing it in this manner. Honestly though, no one will treat her with kid gloves like you two will so maybe it’s best!

Believe it or not… the common practice right now is to use techniques that are still harmful to historic stonework like this. The research has been recent and mostly in the United Kingdom.
